Among all that has been written about Mr. Cobham, I quote from his official biography:
"Only a few times in history has a musician been singled out as the world-class master of his instrument. Billy Cobham is one of those few artists. For over 30 years, he has received international acclaim as the total consummate percussionist...."
I know Boomer wouldn't mind me borrowing this text as quoted here because how better can it be said by anyone?
I count it a privilege to have known and shared with the man till today. He changed my musical life back in the early 70's on more than one occasion: from hanging out when he was with Dreams ["Imagine My Surprise" – [Columbia Records] to playing on the same stage with him during his "Spectrum" tour - and me with the Average White Band (1975) during the "Pickin' Up The Pieces" rave (Atlantic Records).
More
than any other drummer (and there are many whom I respect), Billy Cobham put
something tangible in my musical life that persists till today. Between his
mentorship (beginning just before my senior year at college) and my subsequent
tenure with the late Donny Hathaway, I believe the synergy was there toward a
firm footing in the
